Why Do Elements of Yemeni Culture Appear in Indonesia? | Asma Ibrahim

Asma Ibrahim from afikra's London chapter kicks off a new season of the afika community podcast, Bas Sou'al, and shares her Feature presentation on the Hadrami diaspora's role in bringing Yemeni Culture to Indonesia. Asma starts by sharing a clip from the viral WhatsApp video that inspired her to dive deeper into this topic before reflecting on how the Yemeni diaspora contributed so successfully and deeply to their adopted culture. She traces the first movements out of Yemen to settlements in Indonesia and sheds light on the strong inter-generational efforts to preserve a connection to their home.

THIS SERIES IS PART OF THE AFIKRA PODCAST NETWORK

afikra is all about asking questions and exploring something new and this series takes some of the questions about the histories and cultures of the Arab world asked and explored in one of our community presentations, and broadens it into a podcast episode hosted by Mysa Kafil-Hussain and Yasmin Khawaja. Joining them are community members from our global chapters to talk about a topic that they researched and presented. The presentations are the ‎culmination of the afikra coaching process to help identify a topic, find research and develop the ‎presentation. These presentations’ goal is to showcase the presenter’s curiosity and research and share some knowledge on a ‎topic related to the Arab world’s histories and cultures.
